Welcome To The

Virtual Butterfly Exhibition

Learn about the butterfly species that inhabit Cyprus

Overview

This exhibition is a digital museum dedicated to the butterflies of Cyprus and Greece. Our goal is to raise awareness of these species, preserve their legacy through 3D modelling, and inspire naturalists, researchers, and younger generations with a modern approach to natural history.

The project combines scientific accuracy with innovative visualization. Each specimen, carefully preserved as dry-pinned in entomological boxes, has been transformed into a detailed 3D model using photogrammetry (and Gaussian Splatting). Alongside these interactive models, we provide information on taxonomy, host plants, phenology, and conservation status, offering visitors both an educational and immersive experience.

Gaussian Splatting

Apart from 3D model reconstruction of the butterflies using photogrammetry, we have also created 3D visualizations through Gaussian Splatting. This data can be provided upon request.

The «EMBRACE» project aims to improve butterfly monitoring, contributing to EU environmental and biodiversity goals, particularly regarding climate change resilience. It engages farmers, agronomists, environmental scientists, and other stakeholders through education, including e-learning, a 3D digital butterfly museum, and replicable training materials. By involving a wide range of groups, from civil servants to citizens, the project fosters awareness and participation in biodiversity conservation efforts across Europe.
